Well, it’s been a week, but I finally finished an article about mages. It’s in the sneaky tricks section. My next piece will be more stuff on concept characters. I have always wanted to write a book, so I was thinking of writing some short stories involving the various concept characters. Creative writing is a strange thing to get into. Until you are a success, you are basically wasting your time since no one will take your writing seriously. Of course you can't be a success until someone takes your writing seriously, so it takes a great deal of courage and optimism to write something that others will read. That’s one of the things I like about the Internet, you can write something and feel like it’s a serious when you see it in a browser, but there is no guarantee that anyone will ever read it. All great writiers cringe when they read their early work, so if i do put up some of my first writings, they will come back to haunt me.

I am famous now! Brian (a.k.a. merton monk) mentioned my contribution to PCGen in the latest news release. It's not quite like being on the Tonight Show, but it is pretty cool.

I did a little bit of work for PCGen last night. It's a great tool and I highly recommend it. Every time I use it, I find something about it that makes it cooler. I wrote some documentation for the next release (the help for the Equipping Tab). I am a big fan of the project now. Download it today!

The site is coming along. I thought I would keep the layout simple so I wouldn’t have to spend lots of time setting it up. It’s probably less than half way there and it has no interaction just yet. I just put up a big article in the sneaky tricks section. It’s pretty basic stuff. I will break it up into sections once I have a navigation scheme in place. I am also working on getting some prestige classes written out. I have looked at several others online and I think that many are overpowered. “What’s that?” you may ask, “the quintessential power gamer says something is overpowered?” well, it’s true. Many of them represent great creativity and I mean no disrespect to anyone, but some of them are pretty overpowered.

this was moved from the killzone blog

i have gotten back into roleplaying lately (that's dungeons and dragons, not the other kind, tho it's fun too...) and it's just as much fun as i remember. i think the third edition is probably the coolest one yet. once i become better acquainted with the ins and outs of the rules, then i will be a more effective player. i can see the influence that wizards has had on the game. just like magic the gathering, there are common terms for things that are used over and over. in magic the gathering, creatures had attributes like binding, flanking, first strike, etc. the same is true in 3rd edition, you have flanking (surrounding an opponent), attacks of opportunity, etc.

you can tell it's been engineered for appeal to teenage players who love magic the gathering since the rules are not nearly as dense as they have been in the past. i have been playing RPGs in one form or another since for something like 10 years... maybe more.. certainly long enough to be considered "old school." so i am a pretty serious player. the thing that i love about the 3rd edition is the way that you can specialize characters so that each one is unique. feats are a big part of that. here is simple example:

take two fighters: fighterA and fighterB. both are human, 3rd level, and built from the 32 point buy system. with out going into too much detail, basically, each guy gets a 16 and some 14's to put in their various slots. if i put the 16 into dex. for fighterA, and the 16 into strength for figtherB then the two are now on different paths. when i choose feats for fighterA (mr. dexterity) i can take point blank shot, precise shot, and rapid shot. with his bonus feats, i can take weapon focus long bow and improved initiative. when i choose feats for fighterB (mr. strength) i can take power attack, cleave, and exotic weapon proficiency: bastard sword. with his bonus feats i can take weapon focus:bastard sword, and improved bull rush. when outfitting our two heroes, fighterA wears a chain shirt, and carries a composite long bow, fighterB wears half plate, a large shield, and carries a bastard sword. fighterA is a nimble archer who often shoots enemies before they become a threat and fighterB is a tank that rolls over the enemy at close range. as the two fighters progress, i can choose feats like mobility, shot on the run, and far shot for fighterA, and great cleave, weapon specialization bastard sword, and blind fight for fighterB. in the end, the two are the same character class and race, but vastly different characters.

i am going to add some rolepalying material to this site, including some concept characters. stay tuned!
